Book Review: Love is Powerful

Love Is PowerfulLove Is Powerful by LeUyen Pham
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WOW! Reading this book brought me right back to that day in January 2017, how all of we people, mostly women, came together to rally peacefully against hate, for love. I got teary-eyed and chills up my arms reading this story from a young girl's point of view, and loved reading it aloud to my grandchildren. Though they will never remember this particular moment in history, I am proud to say that I did my tiny part, that their mothers and aunts and friends and family did even more. That we did see results, and that we continue to stand up, to speak out, to fight back. This is such an important message to the next generations! Amazing book, one I will purchase and treasure as a reminder that Love is, indeed, Powerful.

The Girl with No Shadow (Chocolat, #2)
The Girl with No Shadow by Joanne Harris

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I didn't think it was possible to enjoy a story more than Chocolat, until I read the sequel. What a pleasure it was to visit Vianne and Anouk once again, to get caught up in their world of chocolate and magic and romance! Captivating and mysterious, I could barely put this book down, found myself staying up much too late and arising much too early in order to read just one more page...

A delicious treat that, like a perfect piece of chocolate,  was perfectly satisfying  and filling, yet still left me wanting more.

30 Days of Photos: Day 22

30 Days of Photos, 23: A picture of your favorite book

This one was ridiculously hard. An avid reader, it's nearly impossible to choose just one favorite from the thousands I've read over the years, but here's one that made a huge impact on my adult life:

Still to Come...

24. A picture of something you wish you could change

25. A picture of your day

26. A picture of something that means a lot to you

27. A picture of yourself and a family member

28. A picture of something your afraid of

29. A picture that can always make you smile

30. A picture of someone you miss

It Takes Two

It Takes Two: A Novel It Takes Two: A Novel by Patrizia Chen

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I really wanted to like this book but instead found myself struggling through it at the halfway point, wanting to finish but happy that it wasn't much longer. While the sex scenes were certainly steamy and the dance descriptions interesting, I never really connected with any of the characters and found the story line to be predictable and unrealistic. I'm all for romance, but this one read more like a fairy tale for the middle aged set only in this story the handsome price arrived in a jet or Mercedes instead of the traditional white horse.

Overall, not a terrible read but one I wouldn't recommend.

Has anyone else read it and, if so, what did you think?

A Reliable Wife

Just need to share my latest good read with you; my stepmom's book club has included me in their e-mail updates so that I may enjoy their monthly recommendations even if I can't attend their wine-and-laughter infused meetings!

This month they read A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrich. The cover had me instantly intrigued and then I was hooked by the first page! This novel is just not historical fiction, it's a steamy bodice-ripper, mystery, thrilled and just overall fantastic read! Just when I thought I had the characters figured out they did something to have me gasping with surprise.

Set in rural Wisconsin in 1907, during the mid-winter, this is the perfect winter afternoon, curl up on the couch with a cup of hot tea read! However, you should warn your lover ahead of time: you may find yourself grabbing him or her upstairs for an afternoon tryst! Yes, it is just that steamy! *swoon*

Thrifty Thursday

I did a bit of "retail therapy" as my friend Jersey calls it..grin..stopped at my fave thrift store and found some lovely treasures!

*A nice sturdy bamboo silverware caddy, perfect timing since the bottom fell out of my old one just last week! Here in the land of forever-summer we do bbq and entertain year-round so these things really take a beating.

*A fabulous straw bag, really love the faux-snake handles and details! I happen to have a pair of shoes that match perfectly, but that doesn't surprise you does it? *grin*

*A stack of blue & cream sunflower cloth napkins, again perfect for the season!

*Two boldly-printed skirts, can't wait to pair them up with colorful tanks!

*An armload of books - I rarely buy paperbacks at the thrift store because for only $1.50 I can have the hard-cover version.

Total spent: $30.00. Not bad, eh? I couldn't have purchased two new books for that sum! Have any of you read these?

*The Good Wife Strikes Back by Elizabeth Buchan
*Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes
*The Cake Mix Doctor by Anne Byrn
*Multiple Choice by Claire Cook
*Coal Run by Tawni O'Dell
*Comfort me with Apples by Ruth Reichl
*True to Form by Elizabeth Berg

Now, I'm off for cocktails with my sweetie, Kali & Kevin, going to celebrate Mom's return home and many other things that we have to be grateful for.
